The bergamot tree (Citrus bergamia) is a mysterious hybrid, likely between lemon and bitter orange. It takes its name from the city of Bergamo in Lombardy, where it may have been first cultivated. Today, over 90% of the world’s production comes from a narrow coastal strip in Calabria, Italy.

Made famous in the 17th century by Eau de Cologne, bergamot is also the aroma in Earl Grey tea. In perfumery, it’s nearly universal, used in all families to bring freshness and shine.

I used a very high-quality bergamot, stripped of furocoumarins to avoid photosensitivity. I love its complexity: it’s citrusy, but also floral like petitgrain and spicy like pepper. It sets the key of the perfume’s elegance.

For a deep scent like Patchilai, we needed a luminous opening to create contrast. Calabrian Bergamot was obvious. It brings the light that prepares the arrival of darker notes—like a sunbeam piercing a forest canopy.
